The highlight of Sunday’s programme at the Marsa Race Track was the Tazza l-Kbira Championship final on a long distance of 2640m. This final, reserved for our best trotters was won by Nabab du Chatelet under the guidance of Charles Camilleri. It formed part of the 13th meeting of the year made up of seven races all for trotters. The huge crowd present for this meeting is testimony to this sport’s popularity on our islands.

Initially, twelve horses qualified for the Tazza l-Kbira final but few hours prior to the start of the race, Swedish veteran Count Of Life and French Quebec, were scratched. This competition was organized in conjunction with Dragonara Brasserie and before the start of the race the drivers and owners of the finalists were officially presented to the hundreds of racing enthusiasts present at the track through an official parade which included the participation of drivers with classic vintage cars and motorcycles. Every owner and driver was presented with a commemorative memento. These were presented by the Parliamentary Secretary for Sport Stefan Bontempo, Parliamentary Secretary Ian Borg and the Hon Chris Agius. Later on every finalist took part in an official parade led by popular veteran In Vitro du Bourg.

It was Nitesco d’Antony (David Ellul) who made the fastest start, opening a half length lead from Original Blue (Chris Cassar) and Nino de Saintho (Cliferty Calleja). But after 400m, Nitesco d’Antony was overtaken by Nabab du Chatelet (Charles Camilleri). The latter continued to run untroubled till the end and finished first by a length from Nino de Saintho (Cliferty Calleja). Okilaibo (Julian Farrugia) and Mig Of The Wood (Rodney Gatt) ended respectively in third and fourth place. Disappointing was the race for Kakisis which was coming from a win in the semi final stages and for Odedjalo which changed its pace 200m from the end.

Nabab du Chatelet cruised to its third win in a row in an average time of 1.15.9” per kilometer. Dr Bontempo presented the winning trophy to Oliver Bonello and Charles Camilleri owner and driver respectively of the winning horse. Present also for the presentation were the Minister of Health Dr Godfrey Farrugia and Dr Marlene Farrugia.

In the only class Gold race on the card, Phenix de la Roque (Noel Baldacchino) surged ahead with a lap to go in order to chalk up its first win in front of Ouistiti d’Anjou (Carl Caruana) and Ironbar (Julian Farrugia). Kapro Wareco (Mario Fenech) ended fourth.

Sunday’s card included also three races for class Silver trotters. A keen tussle between three horses ensued in the final straight of the first class Silver race. It was favourite Mr Snowman (Rodney Gatt) which secured its third win of the year from Bankir Zon (Clint Vassallo) and Victory Farming (Peter Paul Said). Socrates (John Briffa) finished fourth.
Nobleness Dubrio (Noel Baldacchino) led all the way in the second class Silver race. This French trotter also gained its first win of the year by half length from Max Galbe (Carmelo Agius), Otas Fighter (Carl Caruana) and Darco As (Mark Tanti).

In the third class Silver race, Iatas Kid (Darren Mizzi) was unchallenged during the 2640m distance. Iatas Kid did not find any difficulty to cruise to its first win of the season easily by six lengths from French newcomer Quid de Belle Vue (Charles Camilleri). Another French debutante, Quintin Malin (Eman Attard) and Affe Fager (Brian Zammit) followed home in that order.

Another programme at the Marsa Race Track will be held next Friday. The first race should start at 6.30pm.

Hekk kif inghata l-bidu ufficjali, kien Nitesco d’Antony (David Ellul) l-aktar veloci wara l-karozza tat-tluq. It-tielet tigrija Silver kienet wahda simili ghal dik ta’ qabilha.
