Ofackevo, Nino De Saintho and Lage win major events

As expected, the three heats from the new competition, Sette Giugno Championship for class Premier trotters were the main attraction in Sunday’s 22nd meeting of the season. This championship is being held on short distance of 2140m and these heats were won by Ofackevo, Nino de Saintho and Lage.

From the three class Premier heats, nine horses qualified for the final stage. In the first heat, French Ofackevo (Julian Farrugia) secured its first win in Malta after leading all the way. This trotter triumphed by half length from Sultan November (Shawn Portelli) and Wiss Night Hawk (Oliver Briffa). Absolut Spender (Mark Desira) ended fourth.

Nino de Saintho (Cliferty Calleja) and Orcas Bac (Charles Camilleri) sprinted neck and neck midway through the final straight of the second class Premier heat. It was the former which gained its third win of the season with Simb Mark (Noel Baldacchino) and Original Blue (Chris Cassar) ending respectively in third and fourth place.

Swedish newcomer Lage met no particular trouble in the third and last class Premier heat. Driven by Marco Refalo, Lage ran unimpeded during all the 2140m distance and notched to its first win in Malta by a length from Belafonte (Cliferty Calleja) and Argus Hanover (Charles Camilleri) which also progressed to the final stage. Give To Get (Ludvic Ghigo) ended fourth. The winner clocked the best average time of the day, 1.15.1” per kilometer.

Sunday’s card included also the semi final races from a series of French championships. These are the Prix d’Enghien Championship for class Gold trotters; the Prix De Cabourg reserved for class Silver trotters and the Prix De Cagnes Sur Mer open for class Bronze trotters.

Noble d’Ete (Raymond Clifton) was unchallenged for most of the distance during the first class Gold semi final. This French twelve year old trotter chalked up to its first win of the season from Orion du Vaumicel (Frencu Cassar), Prince Gaillard (Noel Baldacchino) and Orage du Pont (Charles Camilleri). Natif de Salvi (Kurt Saliba) was the last horse to qualify for the final stage from this race.

In the second class Gold semi final, favourite Pepone du Castelet (Charles Camilleri) upped its pace during the last 400m of the race. This horse obtained its fourth win on the trot from Phenix de la Roque (Noel Baldacchino) and Niky du Donjon (Joe Vella). Nitesco d’Antony (David Ellul) and Oscar Indien (Anthony Camilleri) followed home in that order.

Another programme at the Marsa Race Track will be held on Friday evening. The first race should start at 7pm.
