Okilaibo and Julian Farrugia prevailed in Sunday’s major event, the Prix de Vincennes final for class Premier French trotters on a short distance of 2140m. This final formed part of the 26th meeting of the season made up of nine races all for trotters. Yesterday’s card included also four other finals for French horses.

Originally ten horses were expected to line up for the class Premier final. But one of the favourites, Odedjalo, was scratched few hours prior to the start of the race. It was Quelino d’Amour (Mario Fenech) who made the fastest start, opening a half length lead from Orne Des Olivettes (Christian Xerri) and Mark De Chamant (Michael Seychell). But with a lap to go it was Okilaibo (Julian Farrugia) which tried to seize the initiative of Quelino d’Amour. With 700m top go Quelino d’Amour ran out of steam and in came Okilaibo which went in front and continued to pace the race impeccably in order to cruise to its second win of the season by five lenghts from Mark De Chamant (Michael Seychell), Olympien Major (Anthony Spagnol) and Orne Des Olivettes.

It should be noted that two of the favourites prior to the start of the final, Nabab du Chatelet (Charles Camilleri) and Mig Of the Wood (Noel Baldacchino), were both disqualified after changing their pace during the 2140m distance. Okilaibo clocked an average time of 1.14.8” per kilometer and at the end of this final, Ms Emmanuelle Morvillers, an official from the French association SECF, presented the winning trophy to Julian Farrugia and Joseph Seychell, driver and owner of the winning horse.

In the Prix d’Enghien final for class Gold trotters, Orion du Vaumicel (Frencu Cassar) led all the way and registered its first win of the year by half length from Phenix De La Roque (Noel Baldacchino) and Noble d’Ete (Raymond Clifton). Niky du Donjon (Joe Vella) followed behind.

Baldacchino managed also to win another final, the Prix De Cagnes Sur Mer event for class Bronze horses, with Pittacos.
Under the guidance of Noel Baldacchino, this ten year old trotter confirmed that it is one of the most consistent horses of the season. Pittacos outsmarted Marchallach (Rodney Gatt) 100m to the end and chalked up to its fifth win of the year. Navaroso de Khepri (David Ellul) and favourite Quindici (Patrick Spiteri) claimed the other top four positions.

In the Prix de Caen final for class Copper trotters, favourite Qualaudry (Kevin Sciberras) increased its pace midway through the final straight and secured its second consecutive win by half length from Nylan de Mouloire (Rodney Gatt) and Minou de Perdriat (Charles Farrugia).
