The 2013 edition of the Equestrian Festival was held Sunday afternoon at the Marsa Race Track. This festival consisted of blessing of horses, pony races, polo tournament, show jumping, dressage, six finals for trotters on the mile distance and the Coronation Cup final for flat horses. Sunday’s major event, the final for class Premier trotters was won by Absolut Spender driven by Mark Desira.

Eight horses lined up for the class Premier final. As expected, it was Totti T Dream the fastest trotter at first, opening a half length lead from Madam Di Poggio (Shawn Portelli) and Vejby Boom (Charles Camilleri). But around 300m from the finishing line, Totti T Dream started to slow down and was also overtaken by Absolut Spender (Mark Desira) which secured its fifth win of the year easily by three lengths from Vejby Boom. Madam di Poggio and Oran (Carmelo Farrugia) ended respectively in third and fourth place.

After this final, Parliamentary Secretary for Sport, Stefan Buontempo presented the trophy to Mark Desira driver of the winning horse. Absolut Spender clocked an average time of 1.13.2” per kilometer.

In the class Gold final, favourite Charm Hammering (Gilbert Farrugia) led all the way and registered its fifth win of the year and its second consecutive win by half length from Phenix De La Roque (Frencu Cassar). Power Night Star (Charles Degiorgio) and Pan des Couperies (Charles Camilleri) followed behind in that order. Charm Hammering registered the same average time obtained by Absolut Spender in the Premier final.

Sunday’s card included also two finals for class Silver trotters. In the Silver A final, Side Spin (Julian Farrugia) which led all the way was disqualified for hooking and the win was awarded to second placed Damita driven by Marco Debono. In the B final Megiddo (Charles Camilleri) profited from the disqualification of the early leader Pile Ou Face which changed its pace few metres from the finishing line.

Kimberley Downs (Michael Sultana) gained its sixth win of the year and its fifth in a row in the Coronation Cup final for flat horses. This American seven year old upped its pace from the outside with 400m to go and finished first by a length and a half from Timolin (Jean Paul Caruana) and Gold As Good (Eric Zammit). Darielli (Charles Pace) ended fourth.

Once again at the end of this final, Parliamentary Secretary Buontempo accompanied by His Excellency Rob Luke, British High Commissioner for Malta, presented the Coronation Cup to Michael Sultana and Jonathan Borg, jockey and co-owners of the winning horse.
