Sunday’s meeting at the Marsa Race Track heralded the start of the 2014 horse racing season. The card consisted of eight races all for trotters on a short distance of 2140m. Certainly the major event was the seventh race, open for class Premier trotters and which was won by Swedish Vejby Boom driven by Charles Camilleri. The latter also managed to win two races during Sunday’s programme.

Thirteen horses took part in the class Premier race. As expected it was P.A. Surprise (Charles Degiorgio) which took the lead after the official start of the race. This trotter opened a half length lead from Zalgado Transs R (Noel Baldacchino) and Original Blue (Chris Cassar). These three horses continued to set the pace until 400m from the end and in the final straight. However, in the final straight the early pacesetter ran out of steam and got outsmarted by Vejby Boom (Charles Camilleri) which went on to record its first win in Malta. Zalgado Transs R and Pro Shop (Rodney Gatt) completed the top-four order.

In the class Gold race, early leader, Quintet du Vivier (Charles Camilleri), was unable to keep up the pace and started to slow down midway through the final straight. It was Beckham Bob (Jesmar Gafa)’ which overtook Quintet Du Vivier with Dutch newcomer Wies Buitenzorg (Tony Demanuele) and Regent De Tillard (Andrew Farrugia) finishing respectively in third and fourth place.

Sunday’s card included also four races for class Silver trotters. In the first two class Silver races, French horse Reveal Champ Blanc (Tony Cauchi) and Finnish mare Isebel (Christian Xerri) secured their first win of the season after increasing their speed around 700m to the end. Ouragan d’Any (Michael Ellul) and Pile Ou Face (Joe Schembri) led all the way in the other two class Silver races.

Another meeting at the Marsa Race Track will be held on Sunday. The first race should start at 1.30pm.
