The highlight of Sunday’s programme at the Marsa racetrack was a class Premier race on a long distance of 2640m. This race was won by Swedish Vejby Boom and formed part of the 7th meeting of the season made up of eight races. Sunday’s card included also two semi final races from the Assikura Championship for class Gold trotters and a flat race on a distance of 1250m.

Sixteen horses lined up for the class Premier race. It was French newcomer Pat De Fontaine (Noel Baldacchino) which stormed ahead after few metres from the official start of the race. This horse opened a small lead from Quiet Way (Shawn Portelli) and Rocky Composite (Julian Farrugia). With 300m to go, Pat De Fontaine started to slow down and was overtaken by four trotters.

Quiet Way and Vejby Boom (Charles Camilleri) sprinted neck and neck in the final metres of this race and together produced a close finish. The win was eventually awarded to Vejby Boom after that the photo finish was consulted by the racing stewards. Midnight Passion (Eric Bezzina) and Ourasi Diams (Anthony Fenech) completed the top four order. For Vejby Boom this was its second win in Malta.

From the two class Gold semi finals held on a short distance of 2140m, ten horses moved to the final stage. In the first semi final, Qurieux du Ponchet (Noel Baldacchino) dashed strongly from the outside during the last 600m. This French trotter took the lead in the final metres and gained its second win of the year by half length from Prince Gaillard (Julian Farrugia). Oeillet De Phens (Rodney Gatt), Quintet (Brian Zammit) and Phenix De La Roque (Charles Degiorgio) also made it to the final stage.

Dutch mare Wies Buitenzorg (Eric Bezzina) lived up to expectations and obtained its second win on the trot in the second class Gold semi final. This mare ran untroubled in the final metres and triumphed easily by more than two lengths from Happiness Photo (Julian Farrugia) and Quid D’Aliermont (Charles Camilleri). Charm Hammering (Gilbert Farrugia) and Olry Meslois (Emmanuel Fenech) followed home in that order.

In the only flat race of the day, Irish mare Gold As Good (Demis Zammit) was the first out of the blocks, opening a length lead from American horses Darielli (Jean Paul Caruana) and Safari Storm (Charles Vella). With 500m to go, Gold As Good ran out of steam and was overtaken by Safari Storm which secured its first win in Malta by two lenghts and a half from Gold As Good. Ollie Fliptrik (Michael Sultana) finished third.

Another meeting at the Marsa Racetrack will be held next Saturday. The first race should start at 1.30pm.
