Papy De La Potel and Vejby Boom win major races

The highlights of Monday’s programme at the Marsa racetrack were two heats from the Tazza l-Kbira Championship on a long distance of 2640m. These heats were won by Papy De La Potel and Vejby Boom and formed part of the 13th meeting of the year consisting of eight races.

From the two Tazza l-Kbira heat twelve horses qualified for the semi final stage. French newcomer Papy De La Potel cruised to its first win in Malta in the first heat. Driven by one of its owners, Brian Hili, this trotter dashed strongly from the outside midway through the final straight and triumphed by half length from Oltedo De Rieux (Charles Camilleri) and Quirio Charm (Tony Tanti). Vanmaker Limburgia (Rodney Gatt), Ego Sanna (David Ellul) and Totti T Dream (Charles Degiorgio) also made it for the semi final stage.

There was a close tussle between four horses in the final metres of the second open heat. It was Swedish Vejby Boom (Charles Camilleri) which managed to beat the challenge of Made In Hof (Jesmar Gafa’) midway through the final straight. Sultan November (Shawn Portelli), Absolut Spender (Mark Desira), Nabab du Chatelet (Michael Ellul) and Original Blue (Chris Cassar) followed home in that order. For Vejby Boom this was its third win in Malta and its second in a row.

In the first of two Gold races, the early leader Quazoumax (Andrew Farrugia) started to slow down midway through the final straight and was overtaken by Cowboy Party (Chris Cassar) which took its first win in Malta from Quarborandum (Philip Calleja). Quiz Du Lys (Rodney Gatt) notched to its second consecutive win and in Malta in the second class Gold race. This French trotter upped its pace from the outside with 500m to go.

Monday’s card included also a flat race on a long distance of 2250m. Here favourite Kimberley Downs, mounted by Michael Sultana, shot into the lead with 400m from the finishing line and secured its first win of the season and its sixth in a row easily by three lenghts from Ollie Fliptrik (Demis Zammit). Buttermilk (Eric Zammit) finished third.

The next meeting at the Marsa Racetrack will be held on Sunday. The first race should start at 1.45pm.
