The 17th meeting of the year, consisting of eight races was held Sunday afternoon, Easter Sunday, at the Marsa Racetrack. Certainly the most important races were reserved for class Premier trotters on a long distance of 2640m and a flat race on a short distance of 1250m. These races were won respectively by Zalgado Transs R and favourite Pearl Storm.

Five horses took part in the only flat race of the programme. It was favourite Pearl Storm (Michael Sultana) the fastest and the first horse out of the blocks, opening a length lead from Irish newcomer Key Art (Sarah Borg) and Safari Storm (Charles Vella). Pearl Storm was unchallenged during the 1250m distance and finished first from Safari Storm and Timolin (Demis Zammit). Key Art followed home in that order.

In the class Premier race, Zalgado Transs R, under the guidance of young driver Nicholas Bonello, secured its second win of the season. It should be noted that this German eight year old trotter had to go all the way in the last few metres of this race to stave off the challenge of Opal Hall (Charles Camilleri). Utah Hornline (Julian Farrugia) and True Q (Shawn Portelli) claimed the other top four positions. Zalgado Transs R clocked an average time of 1.15.7” per kilometer.

Sunday’s card included also two races for class Gold trotters. In the first class Gold race, Quid d’Aliermont (Charles Camilleri) took the lead midway through the final straight and went to pass the post first from Happiness Photo (Mario Fenech). However, later Quid d’Aliermont was disqualified by the racing stewards and the win was awarded to Happiness Photo. New Star DK (Noel Baldacchino), Veikko Hornline (Julian Farrugia) and Presidential (Brian Hili) also obtained a good place.

Italian trotter Lost Photo sealed its first win in Malta in the second class Gold race. Driven by Herman McKay, Lost Photo was unchallenged during the 2640m and triumphed by more than two lenghts from Quio De Nappes (Julian Farrugia). Count Of Life (Claudio Refalo) and L’Ideal De Fersan (Ian Galea) finished respectively in third and fourth place.

Sunday afternoon, 26-year old Michael Sultana was also awarded with a memento by Mark Vella, MRC Director after being chosen as the best driver-jockey for the month of March. Sultana is a renowned flat racing jockey and during this season he has also obtained his harness driver license.

Last month, Sultana took part in seven trotting races and three flat races, winning two races in each discipline and placing third once in trot and once in flat. The meeting held on the 19th March will remain a memorable one for this young jockey-driver as he managed to win a race both in trot and also in the flat category.

Another meeting at the Marsa Racetrack will be held next Sunday. The programme will also include the final of the prestigious Tazza l-Kbira competition on a long distance of 2640m. The first race should start at 1.45pm.
