Driven by one of its owners, Carmelo Farrugia, French trotter Quartz De Vindecy won Friday’s major event at the Marsa Racetrack. This was the MAPFRE Middle Sea Insurance Final for class Premier trotters on a short distance of 2140 metres. This final formed part of the 35th meeting of the year made up of seven races all for trotters and which were all finals. These races brought to an end this year’s edition of the Summer Championships organized by the Malta Racing Club.

Eleven trotters lined up for the class Premier final. German trotter Wee Catch Diamond (Julian Farrugia) stormed ahead with a lap to go. However this nine year old horse ran out of steam when the finalists turned for their final straight. Wee Catch Diamond was eventually reeled in by Quartz De Vindecy (Carmelo Farrugia) which sealed its second consecutive win and its third in Malta. Quattro D’Arline (Cliferty Calleja) and Donald Duck Tooma (Charles Camilleri) followed home in that order. At the end of this final, MRC Chairman Edwin Borg and Keith Mallia Milanes on behalf of the sponsors, presented the winning trophy to Carmelo Farrugia and George Borg who are the owners of the winning horse.

In the VOB final for class Gold trotters, favourite High Stage (Marco Refao) faltered 150 metres from the finishing line and surrended the lead to the charging Quintet Du Vivier (Charles Camilleri). The latter past the finishing post first easily by two and a half lenghts. Qurieux Du Ponchet (Noel Baldacchino) and Rainbow Sautonne (Clive Gerada) also obtained a good place. Quintet Du Vivier equaled the record of Orcas Bac on the 2140m distance when this trotter clocked an average time of 1.13.4” per kilometer.

The class Silver A and Silver B final were respectively won by favourite Pronger (Claudio Refalo) and outsider
Prince Lu which was under the guidance of another Gozitan driver, Shaun Portelli. Both trotters led all the way during the 2140m distance. Pronger cruised to its fourth win in Malta while Prince Lu grabbed its first win of the season.

Royal In (Marco Debono) was overtaken by Oregon Frontline (Rodney Gatt) midway through the final straight of the class Bronze A Final. For the latter this was its second win in a row. In the class Bronze B final, Dutch Absolutelymeadow (Kurt Saliba) took the lead around 200m from the finishing line and gained its third win of the season.

The first race on the card was the class Copper final. As expected it was French mare Arcadie Lory (Clint Vassallo) which secured its sixth win in a row and in Malta easily by twelve lenghts from Claude Carnevale (Charles Camilleri).

The 2015 season will resume in the middle of September.
