As expected, the President’s Cup final for class Premier trotters was the main attraction in Sunday’s 47th meeting of the season. This final was held on a short distance of 2140m and was won by Vasterbo Paradise driven by Gozitan Claudio Refalo. Yesterday’s card had to consist of nine races all for trotters, but the last race, of the card, which was open for class Gold trotters was later declared as void.

Ten horses lined up for the class Premier final. It was Rio De Lou (Marvin Cauchi) which stormed ahead in the initial stages of the race, building a small lead from a number of trotters, amongst which Ohime Mag (Noel Baldacchino) and Vasterbo Paradise (Claudio Refalo). It was around 800m to go when Noel Baldacchino put Ohime Mag in front. However after only few metres this horse changed pace and eventually was disqualified. Meanwhile, Vasterbo Paradise dashed strongly from the outside when the front horses turned up for their final straight and secured its second win in Malta and of the year from Rainbow Dancer (Michael Ellul) and favourite Nico Oland (Julian Farrugia). Rio De Lou finished fourth.

At the end of this final, President Marie Louise Coleiro Preca presented the winning trophy to Messrs Claudio Refalo and Julian Bezzina driver and owner respectively of the winning horse. In this race, Vasterbo Paradise clocked a good average time of 1.14.2” per kilometer.

Sunday’s programme also included a normal class Premier race on a long distance of 2640m. The early leader, German Wee Catch Diamond (Julian Farrugia) ran out steam midway through the final straight and was reeled in by Quattro d’Arline (Cliferty Calleja) which grabbed its third win of the season from Quetzal De Brix (Clint Vassallo) and Quiet Du Chene (Mario Fenech). Wee Catch Diamond finished fourth.

In the class Gold race, Swedish Big Ben (Salvu Cutajar) was unchallenged for most of the 2640m distance. Cutajar’s trotter gained its third win of the year and in Malta by half length from American newcomer Peel And Stick (Eugenio Bondin) and Ricardo Mols (Philip Calleja). Veikko Hornline (Julian Farrugia) finished fourth.
