The 49th meeting of the season, which was held Sunday afternoon at the Marsa Racetrack, heralded the start of the Prix De Vincennes Championship with three heats for French trotters registered in class Premier. These heats were won by Quo Williams, Quiet Du Chene and Roseau Du Hamel. Yesterday’s programme consisted of ten races all for trotters

From the three class Premier heats on a long distance of 2640m, twelve horses qualified for the final stage of this championship. In the first heat, Quo Willliams, under the guidance of Charles Camilleri, nosed ahead around 500m from the finishing line. This eleven year old trotter succeeded in securing its first win in Malta easily by a length and a half from Qui Sait (Rodney Gatt) and Quillian Joyeux (Andrew Farrugia). Petunia Du Pont (Clint Vassallo) finished fourth.

The early leader in the second class Premier heat, Quorum Quick (Brian Zammit), started to slow down when the front horses turned for their final straight. This horse was reeled in by Quiet Du Chene (Mario Fenech) which cruised to its second win in Malta. Reve De L’Odon (Shaun Portelli) and Quesito d’Or (Frencu Cassar) followed behind in that order.

A keen tussle between four trotters developed in the final straight of the third and last Premier heat. It was Roseau Du Hamel (Paul Galea) which lived up to expectations and maintained its successful streak by grabbing its third win in a row and its fifth of the year from Pedro Vici (Johan Axisa) and Rio De Lou (Marvin Cauchi). Quetzal De Brix (Clint Vassallo) was the last horse to make it to the final stage of this championship after finishing fourth.

Sunday’s card included also four semifinal races from two other French Championships. These were the Prix d’Enghien for class Gold trotters and the Prix De Cabourg for class Silver trotters. In the first class Gold semifinal, Michael Ellul put Quefi Des Caillons in front with a lap to go and this trotter took its third win in Malta from Phenix De La Roque (Noel Baldacchino). Ourasi Diams (Emmanuel Fenech) was unchallenged during the 2640m distance of the second class Gold semi final. Fenech’s trotter past the post first easily by five lenghts from Tresor De Quesny (Andrew Farrugia).

Another meeting at the Marsa Racetrack will be held on Sunday. The first race should start at 1.15pm.
