German eight year old, Zalgado Transs R, driven by Nicholas Bonello, won Saturday’s major event at the Marsa Racetrack. This was the Sette Giugno Championship final for class Premier trotters on a short distance of 2140m. This final formed part of the 27th meeting of the season made up of nine races all for trotters.
Nine horses took part in the class Premier final. As expected, it was favourite Cloria Victis (Charles Degiorgio) which made the fastest start, opening a small lead from Yanantin Boko (Darren Mizzi) and New Star DK (Noel Baldacchino). But Cloria Victis was unable to keep up the pace till the end and with some 300m to go this Swedish trotter ran out of steam and started also to slow down. It was overtaken by Vejby Boom (Charles Camilleri) which past the post first by a length from Zalgado Transs R (Nicholas Bonello). However, few minutes later the racing stewards decided to disqualify Vejby Boom for breaking in the final metres and the win was awarded to Zalgado Transs R. Cloria Victis, Zandina Boshoeve (Paul Galea) and Vanmaker Limburgia (Cliferty Calleja) completed the top four order.
At the end of this final, MRC Chairman Dr Matthew Brincat presented the Sette Giugno Championship trophy to Nicholas Bonello and to his father Angelo, driver and owner respectively of Zalgado Transs R. The winning horse obtained its third win of the year in an excellent average time of 1.13.7” per kilometer.
In the first class Gold race of the card, Quel Homme (Noel Baldacchino) dashed strongly from the outside around 500m from the finishing line and took the lead midway through the final straight. Quel Homme secured its first win in Malta easily by three lengths from Quid D’Aliermont (Charles Camilleri) and Italian Los Angeles (Josef Farrugia). Niky Du Donjon (Joe Vella) finished fourth.
Veikko Hornline (Julian Farrugia) led all the way in the second class Gold race of the programme. This Swedish trotter also notched to its first win of the season from Quermes Rush (Noel Baldacchino). Qadjar Turgot (Mark Mifsud) and Quicker Magoda (Brian Hili) ended respectively in third and fourth place.
Saturday’s card included also two races for class Silver trotters. There was a close finish in the first class Silver race between Livi Dida (Tyler Mifsud), which upped its pace midway through the distance and Pilote De Nganda (James Carabott) which increased its speed in the final metres. The win was awarded to the latter after that the photofinish was consulted by the racing stewards. For Pilote De Nganda this was its first win of the season.
Rapide Du Matin (Charles Camilleri) had to go all out in the last metres of the second class Silver race in order to obtain its first win in Malta. Foot Stompin Music (Kerstin Galea), Damita (Marco Debono) and Reveal Champ Blanc (Tony Cauchi) also obtained a good place.
Another meeting at the Marsa Racetrack will be held Sunday afternoon. The programme will also consist of nine races and will include the 2014 edition of the Mediterranean Derby for flat horses on a distance of 1750m. The first race should start at 1.45pm.
